Pan-Am
The 1901 Pan-American Exposition is a significant part of Buffalo's history that brought international recognition to the “Queen City of the Lakes.” The Pan-Am tour is a two-part program that starts with a 45-minute docent led tour where stories, interactive displays and exhibits about the Pan-Am will be featured.
Guests will then travel by air-conditioned motor coach to historic Forest Lawn Cemetery where they learn about some of the most famous people responsible for this important extravaganza. At Forest Lawn, visitors may meet such “permanent residents” as Dr. Matthew Mann, the gynecologist who operated on President McKinley, and writer, Marian DeForest, who played a prominent role in the 1900's at the Buffalo Express Newspaper. Bottled water and a snack will be provided. The tour is 2 1/2 hours long.
Tours start and end at Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society Resource Center, located at 459 Forest Avenue, across from the Richardson Complex. There is plenty of free street parking.
History Tours
Back by popular demand for the 12th year!
In its 159 years, Forest Lawn Cemetery has become an enduring chronicle of local history and a cultural landmark to local accomplishment. Considering the impact of these accomplishments on America and the world, the cemetery is a national asset and fully deserves its designation in the New York State and National Registers of Historic Places. On this tour guest’s travel through Forest Lawn's historic grounds by air-conditioned motor coach to hear stories about the some of the 155,000 people buried there.
Some of the highlights include views of the natural landscape that is part of Western New York’s largest arboretum, magnificent architecture and memorials and works of art by notable local and international artists. Guests may also encounter a few of Forest Lawn’s residents that will gladly give you some incite as to their contributions to Buffalo and in some cases to the nation. This journey through time and Buffalo’s history culminates at the famous Blocher Memorial. Tour begins at the Delaware and Delavan gates of Forest Lawn and lasts approx 1 1/2 hours.
Nature Tours

Forest Lawn is a picturesque rural cemetery with its rolling hills and charming valleys, spring-fed lakes, and a meandering creek. There are thousands of trees in Forest Lawn, representing 200 different species and varieties and making the cemetery an important arboretum in our region. Over 240 kinds of birds have been spotted in Forest Lawn. They are encouraged to be year-round residents by no-rent housing provided in the countless birdhouses placed throughout the cemetery. Other plant life and wildlife enhance the beauty of the special place in the heart of the city of Buffalo.
Join our resident nature expert, Kim Alexander Thomson as she takes you on a 1 1/2 hour walking tour for an up close and personal look at the many natural wonders that lie within the cemetery gates.
Civil War
This tour is a sell out each year so book early. Civil War re-enactors dressed in authentic military garb and scholar guides are part of this 1 1/2 hour air-conditioned motor coach tour throughout the cemetery. The tour focuses on many of the historic places and people that have a Western New York connection to this important time of United States history.
African American
An entertaining 1 1/2 hour ride through the cemetery on air conditioned motors coaches that takes a look at the notable African Americans buried in Forest Lawn that made significant contributions to our the city of Buffalo and to the nation. The tour is a collaboration with the The Afro-American Historical Association of the Niagara Frontier, Inc. and features notables such as Mary Talbert, who was served terms as president, vice president and director of the NAACP.

A Typographic tour of Forest Lawn Cemetery. Take a walk through Forest Lawn and see different typefaces and learn about stonecutters in Western New York.
Join Forest Lawn’s Interpretive Program Director, Sandy Starks on a 1 ½ hour walk through the cemetery looking at some of the outstanding monuments and their varied typography, many of which were created during the Victorian time period. Also view work such as Frank Lloyd Wright’s Blue Sky Mausoleum and the Blocher Memorial. Hear stories about the movers and shakers that made up this great city (From Chief Red Jacket to Rick James) as you discover unique type designs and stone cutting craftsmanship. Light refreshments will be served during the tour.
