SUMMARY:Historic Chapel at Forest Hill Cemetery to be Rededicated
DESCRIPTION:Ceremony to mark the successful completion of collaboration between Attica Landmark Preservation Society and Forest Hill Cemetery to stabilize and restore iconic structure.\nSaturday\, May 23 – 11:00 a.m.\nForest Hill Cemetery Chapel\n40 High Street\nAttica\, NY 14001\nFittingly\, during Memorial Day weekend\, the community of Attica will gather for a special ceremony to rededicate the historic chapel in Forest Hill Cemetery. The ceremony will mark the successful completion of an ambitious project to stabilize and restore the iconic structure\, led by the Attica Landmark Preservation Society and Forest Hill Cemetery\, and made possible through the support of many community residents and business owners in the Village of Attica. \nBuilt in 1902\, before the existence of funeral homes\, the Chapel long served as the place where funerals and memorials were held in Forest Hill. Given the Chapel’s location near the center of the cemetery\, the building became its focal point\, emerging as a space for a variety of community gatherings\, weddings\, and other social events such as Memorial Day\, and Veterans Day celebrations\, and more. \nHowever\, over time\, the structure deteriorated badly\, prompting the Attica Landmark Preservation Society (ALPS)\, as stewards of the historic building\, to work with the Forest Lawn Cemetery Group\, which acquired Forest Hill Cemetery in 2023. The two organizations collaborated on a plan to stabilize and restore the Chapel and chart the course for its preservation\, including raising the $200\,000 in funds necessary. \nClick here for more information

SUMMARY:Forest Lawn Chapel Chat with Dr. Erik Seeman
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we welcome Dr. Erik R. Seeman\, UB Distinguished Professor of History at the University at Buffalo\, to the Forest Lawn Chapel for the next talk in our new series called Chapel Chats. This initiative will offer a variety of death care awareness programs and resources that promote a healthy attitude about mortality. \n  \nForest Lawn\, the Rural Cemetery Movement\, and Victorian Death Practices \nEver wonder why Forest Lawn looks the way it does\, with its sculpted landscape and meandering paths?  That’s because it’s a splendid example of the “rural cemetery movement\,” the effort to beautify burial grounds that swept the United States in the 1830s and 1840s.  This illustrated talk puts Forest Lawn in the context of the rural cemetery movement and the famously macabre Victorian death practices the movement helped inspire.  The session will end with a conversation about the connections between past and present death practices. \n  \n \n  \nErik R. Seeman\, UB Distinguished Professor of History at the University at Buffalo\, is the author of four books on early American religion and death practices.  His most recent book\, Speaking with the Dead in Early America\, won the Lawrence Levine Award from the Organization of American Historians for the best book in American cultural history.  Over the past quarter-century at UB\, more than a thousand students have taken his “Death in America” lecture course. \n  \nAdvance registration is required as space is limited. \nAddress: Forest Lawn Cemetery\, 1990 Main St.\, Buffalo\, NY 14208\nEvent Location: This event takes place at Forest Lawn’s historic Chapel in the heart of the cemetery. Enter the cemetery at any gate and follow the white painted line on the road to the Chapel; ample parking is available.\nQuestions: Please call us at (716) 427-0727 or email Amizetta Haj\, Director of Community Engagement\, at ahaj@forest-lawn.com.

SUMMARY:Exploring the Grave: Forest Lawn's 175 Year Legacy\, with Author Allison C. Meier
DESCRIPTION:Forest Lawn Cemetery is proud to welcome Allison Meier as the keynote speaker for our 175th anniversary celebration!\nAlthough people have always cared for their dead\, what a grave looks like has radically changed over time\, from simple interments in the ground to elaborate mausolea. Since Forest Lawn opened 175 years ago\, there have been changes in this final statement\, including the personalization of memorial markers and the rise of cremation. Allison C. Meier\, author of Grave (Bloomsbury\, 2023)\, explores this history and the ways the grave is still changing in her research\, writing\, and time as a cemetery tour guide. \nAuthor’s remarks at the Buffalo History Museum will be complemented by a VIP trolley tour with Meier in Forest Lawn. The tour will highlight burial sites relating to and contextualizing the themes of the talk. Even if you are a Forest Lawn regular\, on this tour participants will consider what the grave has been and what it could be through visits to grand\, curious\, humble\, and inventive memorials across the cemetery. \n \nAllison C. Meier is an Oklahoma-born\, Brooklyn-based writer\, editor\, and researcher focused on visual culture\, architecture\, and overlooked history. She believes in writing about the arts and heritage of our world in an accessible\, engaging way. Her recent book is called Grave (2023\, Bloomsbury) and is in the Object Lessons book series. Allison is currently the editor of Fine Books & Collections magazine and is a research associate with the American Folk Art Museum. She was previously a staff writer at Hyperallergic and the senior editor at Atlas Obscura. Her bylines are extensive and include the New York Times\, National Geographic\, and Smithsonian Magazine. Allison is also a licensed New York City sightseeing guide and moonlights as a cemetery tour guide at New York burial grounds. \n  \nEvent Location & Ticketing Information\nThe lecture will take place at the Buffalo History Museum (1 Museum Ct.\, Buffalo\, NY 14216) from 10:30 am-12 pm\, followed by an opportunity for book purchase and signing by the author. \nTicket Options\nLecture Only | $25 \nLecture + VIP Trolley Tour | $125: Following the lecture\, ticket holders will be provided a boxed lunch and will then board Forest Lawn’s trolley at the History Museum for a tour of the cemetery from 1-3pm\, led by Allison Meier\, and Forest Lawn’s Director of Community Engagement\, Amizetta Haj. The Trolley will then take passengers back to the History Museum at the conclusion of the tour. \nAdvance registration for the Keynote and the Keynote/Trolley Tour is required as space is limited. \n  \nMany thanks to an anonymous Forest Lawn Heritage Foundation donor for their support of Forest Lawn’s 175th Anniversary Keynote Address.
