SUMMARY:Forest Lawn Chapel Chat with Dr. Erik Seeman
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we welcome Dr. Erik R. Seeman\, UB Distinguished Professor of History at the University at Buffalo\, to the Forest Lawn Chapel for the next talk in our new series called Chapel Chats. This initiative will offer a variety of death care awareness programs and resources that promote a healthy attitude about mortality. \n  \nForest Lawn\, the Rural Cemetery Movement\, and Victorian Death Practices \nEver wonder why Forest Lawn looks the way it does\, with its sculpted landscape and meandering paths?  That’s because it’s a splendid example of the “rural cemetery movement\,” the effort to beautify burial grounds that swept the United States in the 1830s and 1840s.  This illustrated talk puts Forest Lawn in the context of the rural cemetery movement and the famously macabre Victorian death practices the movement helped inspire.  The session will end with a conversation about the connections between past and present death practices. \n  \n \n  \nErik R. Seeman\, UB Distinguished Professor of History at the University at Buffalo\, is the author of four books on early American religion and death practices.  His most recent book\, Speaking with the Dead in Early America\, won the Lawrence Levine Award from the Organization of American Historians for the best book in American cultural history.  Over the past quarter-century at UB\, more than a thousand students have taken his “Death in America” lecture course. \n  \nAdvance registration is required as space is limited. \nAddress: Forest Lawn Cemetery\, 1990 Main St.\, Buffalo\, NY 14208\nEvent Location: This event takes place at Forest Lawn’s historic Chapel in the heart of the cemetery. Enter the cemetery at any gate and follow the white painted line on the road to the Chapel; ample parking is available.\nQuestions: Please call us at (716) 427-0727 or email Amizetta Haj\, Director of Community Engagement\, at ahaj@forest-lawn.com.

SUMMARY:Exploring the Grave: Forest Lawn's 175 Year Legacy\, with Author Allison C. Meier
DESCRIPTION:Forest Lawn Cemetery is proud to welcome Allison Meier as the keynote speaker for our 175th anniversary celebration!\nAlthough people have always cared for their dead\, what a grave looks like has radically changed over time\, from simple interments in the ground to elaborate mausolea. Since Forest Lawn opened 175 years ago\, there have been changes in this final statement\, including the personalization of memorial markers and the rise of cremation. Allison C. Meier\, author of Grave (Bloomsbury\, 2023)\, explores this history and the ways the grave is still changing in her research\, writing\, and time as a cemetery tour guide. \nAuthor’s remarks at the Buffalo History Museum will be complemented by a VIP trolley tour with Meier in Forest Lawn. The tour will highlight burial sites relating to and contextualizing the themes of the talk. Even if you are a Forest Lawn regular\, on this tour participants will consider what the grave has been and what it could be through visits to grand\, curious\, humble\, and inventive memorials across the cemetery. \n \nAllison C. Meier is an Oklahoma-born\, Brooklyn-based writer\, editor\, and researcher focused on visual culture\, architecture\, and overlooked history. She believes in writing about the arts and heritage of our world in an accessible\, engaging way. Her recent book is called Grave (2023\, Bloomsbury) and is in the Object Lessons book series. Allison is currently the editor of Fine Books & Collections magazine and is a research associate with the American Folk Art Museum. She was previously a staff writer at Hyperallergic and the senior editor at Atlas Obscura. Her bylines are extensive and include the New York Times\, National Geographic\, and Smithsonian Magazine. Allison is also a licensed New York City sightseeing guide and moonlights as a cemetery tour guide at New York burial grounds. \n  \nEvent Location & Ticketing Information\nThe lecture will take place at the Buffalo History Museum (1 Museum Ct.\, Buffalo\, NY 14216) from 10:30 am-12 pm\, followed by an opportunity for book purchase and signing by the author. \nTicket Options\nLecture Only | $25 \nLecture + VIP Trolley Tour | $125: Following the lecture\, ticket holders will be provided a boxed lunch and will then board Forest Lawn’s trolley at the History Museum for a tour of the cemetery from 1-3pm\, led by Allison Meier\, and Forest Lawn’s Director of Community Engagement\, Amizetta Haj. The Trolley will then take passengers back to the History Museum at the conclusion of the tour. \nAdvance registration for the Keynote and the Keynote/Trolley Tour is required as space is limited. \n  \nMany thanks to an anonymous Forest Lawn Heritage Foundation donor for their support of Forest Lawn’s 175th Anniversary Keynote Address.

SUMMARY:Angel of Hope Vigil
DESCRIPTION:A tragic story became the catalyst for an effort to raise awareness about child abuse and domestic violence\,  culminating in the creation of a memorial to the young victims of these crimes\, and to all children who have been taken from us far too early\, for whatever reason. \nEach year since its dedication in Forest Lawn in 2018\, the Angel of Hope memorial has been the focal point of an annual vigil to honor the memories of these children and reaffirm our community’s commitment to ending child abuse in all its forms.  All are welcomed and encouraged to attend this year’s vigil. \nThe Story of Laura Cummings and Western New York’s Angel of Hope \nIn January\, 2010 a developmentally disabled young woman from North Collins named Laura Cummings was murdered following years of brutal emotional\, psychological\, physical and sexual abuse at the hands of her mother and oldest brother. She was 23 years old at the time of her death\, though she had the mental capability of a seven or eight-year-old child. \nThe story of her tortured life shocked the community and led to the establishment of the Loving Laura Project\, a community-supported fundraising initiative intended to honor the life of Laura Cummings\, and shine a brighter light on the scourge of child abuse. \nLed by Churches In Action – a cross denominational “coalition” of WNY churches\, committed to making a difference for people in WNY and beyond\, one of the project’s goals was to establish an “Angel of Hope” memorial in a high-profile public space to stand as a symbol of hope for all those who have lost a child\, as well as a symbol against violence and for justice for the most defenseless in our society\, our innocent children. This goal was achieved in 2018 with the dedication of the Angel of Hope memorial in Forest Lawn. \nThe Angel of Hope statue was introduced to the world in the book The Christmas Box\, a worldwide bestseller and hit television movie by author Richard Paul Evans. In the book\, a woman mourns the loss of her child at the base of an angel monument. Though the story is mostly fiction\, the angel monument once existed\, but is believed to have been destroyed. Evans commissioned a new bronze angel statue\, in response to reports that grieving parents were seeking out the angel as a place to grieve and heal. The monument was dedicated in Salt Lake City\, Utah on December 6\, 1994… corresponding with the date of the child’s death in The Christmas Box. \nIn addition to the angel in the Salt Lake City cemetery\, there are Christmas Box angel statues\, each often named ‘Angel of Hope\,’ in dozens of cities across America\, but also in Canada and Japan. The memorial in Forest Lawn is the 146th Angel of Hope in existence worldwide. And at many of these memorials\, a candlelight vigil is held during the month of December.  This year’s vigil is being held on Thursday\, March 6th at 5:00 pm\, (Laura Cummings birthday) in the Forest Lawn Chapel.
