SUMMARY:Winter Birds of Forest Lawn - Nature Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join naturalist\, Mary Jo Graham of Oakmoss Education\, for a casual walk through Forest Lawn to discover those hardy species that tough out the extreme conditions of Winter. Learn how physical adaptations\, behaviors and relationship changes among our overwintering birds help them make the best of what Nature dishes out during the colder months. We’ll also seek out a few of the very early returnees from warmer climes. This event will begin indoors with a short presentation\, then reconvene outdoors for exploration of the grounds. Binoculars and field guides are encouraged! \nImportant Information\nAddress: Forest Lawn Cemetery\, 1990 Main St.\, Buffalo\, NY 14208\nTickets: We do not issue physical or e-tickets; attendees will be checked in by name of ticket purchaser.\nCheck-in: Check-in takes place at Forest Lawn’s historic Chapel in the heart of the cemetery. Enter the cemetery at any gate and follow the white painted line on the road to the Chapel.\nParking: There is plenty of parking at the Chapel/check-in location. \nFor Your Comfort: This walk will be approximately 1.5 miles; we strongly encourage attendees to wear suitable outerwear/footwear as the route may include some wet/muddy and uneven terrain. \nRefunds and exchanges: Ticket sales are final. If severe weather is forecasted\, we will monitor the conditions for the best chance of proceeding with the walk. No exchanges or refunds unless the walk is canceled.\nQuestions: Please call us at (716) 427-0727 or email Amizetta Haj\, Director of Community Engagement\, at ahaj@forest-lawn.com.

SUMMARY:Angel of Hope Vigil
DESCRIPTION:A tragic story became the catalyst for an effort to raise awareness about child abuse and domestic violence\,  culminating in the creation of a memorial to the young victims of these crimes\, and to all children who have been taken from us far too early\, for whatever reason. \nEach year since its dedication in Forest Lawn in 2018\, the Angel of Hope memorial has been the focal point of an annual vigil to honor the memories of these children and reaffirm our community’s commitment to ending child abuse in all its forms.  All are welcomed and encouraged to attend this year’s vigil. \nThe Story of Laura Cummings and Western New York’s Angel of Hope \nIn January\, 2010 a developmentally disabled young woman from North Collins named Laura Cummings was murdered following years of brutal emotional\, psychological\, physical and sexual abuse at the hands of her mother and oldest brother. She was 23 years old at the time of her death\, though she had the mental capability of a seven or eight-year-old child. \nThe story of her tortured life shocked the community and led to the establishment of the Loving Laura Project\, a community-supported fundraising initiative intended to honor the life of Laura Cummings\, and shine a brighter light on the scourge of child abuse. \nLed by Churches In Action – a cross denominational “coalition” of WNY churches\, committed to making a difference for people in WNY and beyond\, one of the project’s goals was to establish an “Angel of Hope” memorial in a high-profile public space to stand as a symbol of hope for all those who have lost a child\, as well as a symbol against violence and for justice for the most defenseless in our society\, our innocent children. This goal was achieved in 2018 with the dedication of the Angel of Hope memorial in Forest Lawn. \nThe Angel of Hope statue was introduced to the world in the book The Christmas Box\, a worldwide bestseller and hit television movie by author Richard Paul Evans. In the book\, a woman mourns the loss of her child at the base of an angel monument. Though the story is mostly fiction\, the angel monument once existed\, but is believed to have been destroyed. Evans commissioned a new bronze angel statue\, in response to reports that grieving parents were seeking out the angel as a place to grieve and heal. The monument was dedicated in Salt Lake City\, Utah on December 6\, 1994… corresponding with the date of the child’s death in The Christmas Box. \nIn addition to the angel in the Salt Lake City cemetery\, there are Christmas Box angel statues\, each often named ‘Angel of Hope\,’ in dozens of cities across America\, but also in Canada and Japan. The memorial in Forest Lawn is the 146th Angel of Hope in existence worldwide. And at many of these memorials\, a candlelight vigil is held during the month of December.  This year’s vigil is being held on Thursday\, March 6th at 5:00 pm\, (Laura Cummings birthday) in the Forest Lawn Chapel.

SUMMARY:Stories in Stone: Celebrating the 175 Year Legacy of Forest Lawn
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we welcome guest speaker\, Marla Bujnicki\, for a special presentation to celebrate the cemetery’s 175th anniversary. We will explore the history and legacy of Forest Lawn by examining its growth and development through the decades\, sharing lesser known facts and stories about the cemetery\, and of course most importantly\, highlighting some of the notable individuals who rest within the gates. \nMarla Bujnicki is first and foremost a promoter of Buffalo\, a preservationist and a history enthusiast. She retired from the Department of Homeland Security after 37 years of government employment and since then has been training docents and giving tours for both Preservation Buffalo Niagara (PBN) and Forest Lawn. More recently\, she was a guest on Judge Penny Wolfgang’s radio broadcast and has also been giving presentations in conjunction with the county-sponsored University Express Program. Her past four summers\, have been spent as a narrator aboard the Miss Buffalo II tour boat and she has been active in the preservation community since 2005. \nAdvance registration is required as space is limited.  This presentation will be given in two parts with a brief intermission; complimentary refreshments will be served. \nAddress: Forest Lawn Cemetery\, 1990 Main St.\, Buffalo\, NY 14208 \nEvent Location: This event takes place at Forest Lawn’s historic Chapel in the heart of the cemetery. Enter the cemetery at any gate and follow the white painted line on the road to the Chapel; ample parking is available.\nQuestions: Please call us at (716) 427-0727 or email Amizetta Haj\, Director of Community Engagement\, at ahaj@forest-lawn.com.
