DESCRIPTION:Join us as we welcome guest speaker\, Brandon W. Brooks\, curator of the John L. Wehle Gallery at Genesee Country Village & Museum\, to explore the world of 19th-century American mourning fashions for men\, women\, and children. In addition to curation\, Brandon creates and hosts innovative programming and speaking events at the Gallery itself as well as at annual conferences\, often related to fashion\, textile\, or art history. Brandon’s current role also involves managing a small staff of gallery docents\, collaboration between sister museums and historical institutions across the State of New York\, serving as a peer leader on the DEAI (diversity\, equity\, accessibility\, and inclusion) committee\, and the creation and expansion of a free\, publicly-accessible historic pattern database\, reverse-engineered from historic extant originals. Outside of Genesee Country Village & Museum\, Brandon serves a board member for Rochester’s Rainbow Union (formally Out Alliance)\, as well as for the1816 Farmington Quaker Meetinghouse Museum. SUMMARY:Who's Who on the Avenue
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we welcome guest speaker\, Marla Bujnicki\, to discuss several movers & shakers\, who at one time\, had a Delaware Avenue address. Today\, all reside at Forest Lawn as permanent residents.  A U.S. president\, a renowned doctor\, famous architect and local brewmaster all left our city a legacy. Their stories and others will be highlighted as we explore Delaware Avenue from the other side of the lawn. \nMarla Bujnicki is first and foremost a promoter of Buffalo\, a preservationist and a history enthusiast. She retired from the Department of Homeland Security after 37 years of government employment and since then has been training docents and giving tours for both Preservation Buffalo Niagara (PBN) and Forest Lawn. More recently\, she was a guest on Judge Penny Wolfgang’s radio broadcast and has also been giving presentations in conjunction with the county-sponsored University Express Program. Her past four summers\, have been spent as a narrator aboard the Miss Buffalo II tour boat and she has been active in the preservation community since 2005. \nRegistration is required as space is limited. A $10 suggested donation will be accepted at the door for the Forest Lawn Heritage Foundation\, which helps to make programs like this possible for the community. \nAddress: Forest Lawn Cemetery\, 1990 Main St.\, Buffalo\, NY 14208 \nEvent Location: This event takes place at Forest Lawn’s historic Chapel in the heart of the cemetery. Enter the cemetery at any gate and follow the white painted line on the road to the Chapel; ample parking is available.\nQuestions: Please call us at (716) 427-0727 or email Amizetta Haj\, Director of Community Engagement\, at ahaj@forest-lawn.com. \n

SUMMARY:The Life & Times of Bennet Riley: Book Talk with Author\, Tom Schobert
DESCRIPTION:Hush the Cannon’s Roar – The Life and Times of Bennet Riley: Defender of Buffalo\, by historian Tom Schobert\, was recently released by NFB Publishing. The book traces the career and personal life of Major General Bennet C. Riley\, who served in the U.S. Army for 40 years from the War of 1812 through the Mexican War and culminated with his serving as the last military governor of California. During the early 1840’s\, Riley was the commanding officer of the Buffalo Barracks\, an army post located on what is now the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site. The experience of Riley during his time here and his interactions with notable Buffalonians convinced him to return here after his military service was finished. The extensively researched book is told from the perspective of Riley’s wife\, Arabella\, following his passing. Riley\, and most members of his immediate family are interred at Buffalo’s Forest Lawn Cemetery.   \nAuthor Thomas F. Schobert of West Seneca is a retired health care administrator and retired Lieutenant-Colonel in the U.S. Army\, He is a graduate of Canisius University in Buffalo and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth\, Kansas. He is past President of the West Seneca Historical Society\, former curator of the West Seneca Historical Society Museum\, and former member of the Board of Trustees of the Hull Family Home and Farmstead. Tom also re-enacts General Riley as part of Forest Lawn’s Famous Sunday in the Cemetery Tours (pictured). \n  \nFollowing the presentation\, Tom will take questions and have books available for purchase and personalization. \nRegistration is required as space is limited. A $10 suggested donation will be accepted at the door for the Forest Lawn Heritage Foundation\, which helps to make programs like this possible for the community. \n\nImportant Information\nTickets: You do not need to print any ticketing information; attendees will be checked in by name. \nEvent Location: The event will take place at the Margaret L.
