DESCRIPTION:Join us for a presentation with architect\, Clinton Brown\, who along with Ramona Whitaker\, authored Olmsted’s Elmwood: The Rise\, Decline and Renewal of Buffalo’s Parkway Neighborhood\, A Model for America’s Cities\, as he shares an overview of how Buffalo began as a place in which to live well. \nRapid growth in commercial wealth and cultural sophistication after the opening of the Erie Canal expanded the reach of the former village into the booming city that bordered the primeval forest that became Forest Lawn Cemetery in 1849\, also serving as Buffalo’s primary public park. After the Civil War\, business leaders commissioned Frederick Law Olmsted to design a free public park for all\, partly to relieve the overcrowding at the cemetery. Forest Lawn was a model for Olmsted\, and partner Calvert Vaux\, for their park and parkway designs from which emerged the Elmwood District. Olmsted’s Elmwood concludes with a call for a curatorial approach to managing an everyday living heritage landscape\, that is employed at Forest Lawn\, for the entire neighborhood. \nFollowing the presentation\, Clinton will take questions and have books available for purchase. \nRegistration is required as space is limited. SUMMARY:Tibor Baranski Documentary Screening
DESCRIPTION:After the success of last year’s screening\, we are partnering again with the Holocaust Education Resource Organization to present a documentary in memory of the life and work of Tibor Baranski. \nTibor Baranski confronted the horrors of the Holocaust and was credited with saving at least 3\,000 Jewish men\, women\, and children from death at the hands of the Nazis. \nFor this heroic work\, Tibor was honored by Yad Vashem as a “Righteous Among the Nations\,” their highest honor for gentiles who risked their own lives to save Jews. And in 1980\, President Jimmy Carter appointed him to The President’s Commission on the Holocaust\, which recommended the opening of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington\, D.C. \nTibor had left his homeland after the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and eventually settled in Buffalo\, where he lived until his passing in 2019. Since that time\, Tibor and his wife Katalin (who passed in 2011) are entombed in a private sarcophagus in Forest Lawn\, prominently situated for ready public access among three of the cemetery’s Jewish\, Christian\, and non-sectarian burial sections. \nIn 2022\, a documentary about Tibor’s remarkable story was made in Hungarian. Join us for an exclusive screening of this film (with English subtitles)\, followed by a discussion that will include some of Tibor’s family members. \nTickets are free and space is limited\, so advance registration is required.
