SUMMARY:Tibor Baranski Documentary Screening
DESCRIPTION:After the success of last year’s screening\, we are partnering again with the Holocaust Education Resource Organization to present a documentary in memory of the life and work of Tibor Baranski. \nTibor Baranski confronted the horrors of the Holocaust and was credited with saving at least 3\,000 Jewish men\, women\, and children from death at the hands of the Nazis. \nFor this heroic work\, Tibor was honored by Yad Vashem as a “Righteous Among the Nations\,” their highest honor for gentiles who risked their own lives to save Jews. And in 1980\, President Jimmy Carter appointed him to The President’s Commission on the Holocaust\, which recommended the opening of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington\, D.C. \nTibor had left his homeland after the 1956 Hungarian Revolution and eventually settled in Buffalo\, where he lived until his passing in 2019. Since that time\, Tibor and his wife Katalin (who passed in 2011) are entombed in a private sarcophagus in Forest Lawn\, prominently situated for ready public access among three of the cemetery’s Jewish\, Christian\, and non-sectarian burial sections. \nIn 2022\, a documentary about Tibor’s remarkable story was made in Hungarian. Join us for an exclusive screening of this film (with English subtitles)\, followed by a discussion that will include some of Tibor’s family members. \nTickets are free and space is limited\, so advance registration is required. Donations will be accepted at the door for the Forest Lawn Heritage Foundation\, which helps to make programs like this possible for the community. \n\nImportant Information\nAddress: Forest Lawn Cemetery\, 1990 Main St.\, Buffalo\, NY 14208\nEvent Location: This event takes place at Forest Lawn’s historic Chapel in the heart of the cemetery. Enter the cemetery at any gate and follow the white painted line on the road to the Chapel; ample parking is available.\nInclement Weather Policy: If severe weather is forecasted\, we will monitor the conditions for the best chance of proceeding with the event. Cancellations will be announced via email; make sure to check your spam folders.\nQuestions: Please call us at (716) 427-0727 or email Amizetta Haj\, Director of Community Engagement\, at ahaj@forest-lawn.com.

SUMMARY:Angel of Hope Vigil
DESCRIPTION:A tragic story became the catalyst for an effort to raise awareness about child abuse and domestic violence\,  culminating in the creation of a memorial to the young victims of these crimes\, and to all children who have been taken from us far too early\, for whatever reason. \nEach year since its dedication in Forest Lawn in 2018\, the Angel of Hope memorial has been the focal point of an annual vigil to honor the memories of these children and reaffirm our community’s commitment to ending child abuse in all its forms.  All are welcomed and encouraged to attend this year’s vigil. \nThe Story of Laura Cummings and Western New York’s Angel of Hope \nIn January\, 2010 a developmentally disabled young woman from North Collins named Laura Cummings was murdered following years of brutal emotional\, psychological\, physical and sexual abuse at the hands of her mother and oldest brother. She was 23 years old at the time of her death\, though she had the mental capability of a seven or eight-year-old child. \nThe story of her tortured life shocked the community and led to the establishment of the Loving Laura Project\, a community-supported fundraising initiative intended to honor the life of Laura Cummings\, and shine a brighter light on the scourge of child abuse. \nLed by Churches In Action – a cross denominational “coalition” of WNY churches\, committed to making a difference for people in WNY and beyond\, one of the project’s goals was to establish an “Angel of Hope” memorial in a high-profile public space to stand as a symbol of hope for all those who have lost a child\, as well as a symbol against violence and for justice for the most defenseless in our society\, our innocent children. This goal was achieved in 2018 with the dedication of the Angel of Hope memorial in Forest Lawn. \nThe Angel of Hope statue was introduced to the world in the book The Christmas Box\, a worldwide bestseller and hit television movie by author Richard Paul Evans. In the book\, a woman mourns the loss of her child at the base of an angel monument. Though the story is mostly fiction\, the angel monument once existed\, but is believed to have been destroyed. Evans commissioned a new bronze angel statue\, in response to reports that grieving parents were seeking out the angel as a place to grieve and heal. The monument was dedicated in Salt Lake City\, Utah on December 6\, 1994…corresponding with the date of the child’s death in The Christmas Box. \nIn addition to the angel in the Salt Lake City cemetery\, there are Christmas Box angel statues\, each often named ‘Angel of Hope\,’ in dozens of cities across America\, but also in Canada and Japan. The memorial in Forest Lawn is the 146th Angel of Hope in existence worldwide. And at many of these memorials\, a candlelight vigil is held during the month of December.  This year’s vigil is being held on Monday\, December 18 at 5:00 pm in the Forest Lawn chapel.
